If someone likes my images they can afford to pay FAIR rates for them. I won't screw the industry or other photographers out of work. Unfortunately Trying to make it in the photo biz, lends me to having some artistic and industry ethics. They don't want to pay for it, but will gladly use it to sell bikes.Ībsolutely. Put up a contest where thousands of amateurs can enter their occasional good shot does wonders for a company's advertising budget. Modern camera equipemnt allows many amateurs to snap off the occasional fantastic shot. I think I had one racer from all my pictures that I took at Crankworx who was actually on a Kona.īecause companies should be paying for their photos. And apparently outside of the slopestyle riders that ride for Kona, there's nobody racing on them. I did take the time to look through some of my photos to see what I have from someone riding a Kona since Im pretty sure they won't be running an ad of someone on a Norco:lol. From an amateur stand point, this contest isn't necessarily all that bad (For the amateurs that don't actually understand how the industry works). But as said as well, from a professional stand point, this contest sucks. The only reason this contest works is due to amateurs sending in photos that they take of friends, at a competition or race … something along those lines.

I have a feeling you don't get extra payment if they use your photo in an ad. Basically they pay you $500 (Assuming you're the winner) and then that's it. If in fact I have misunderstood the "Fine Print" and Kona will be paying to use your photos commercailly then My apologies. You in turn get paid less than fair market price.

This is an awesome marketing idea that in the end saves the boys at Kona tons of dough for the image rights. An exclusive to the shot would cost them $10,000 from any pro photographer. It is nice that they give YOU the right to resell your photos… considering they don't have an exclusive to the shot. (Ie if the ad is worth $1000 then you'd get $3000 worth of retail gear.) If you are doing a contra deal it is usually 3 times the rate. If that indeed is the case a 3 insertion full page (one page not double truck) is worth $750-1000 USD. So my take if you win is that you get $500 in product contra and they get to use your shot in the marketing machine. At least they have a legitimate prize to give away along with using the photos in ads.ĭoesn't say anything about paying you for the usage of the photos in the advertising campaign though. Much better compared to the Energizer one IMO.
